Sophomores Lauren Bowman, Harlan Chambers and Hugh McMullen, along with junior Liz Brown, formed the Lost Flamingo Company in the fall of 2002 after working together on a production of "Alice in Wonderland" for The Drama Club Youth Theatre, an Athens community theater organization for children.
The Lost Flamingo Company was formed with the idea of giving Ohio University students the opportunity to participate in all aspects of theater, including acting, directing, producing, stage management, set design, costumes, lighting, and sound.
The name Lost Flamingo comes from a prop piece (a flamingo) that went missing in the early days of the company. The name also is used to imply that those students who were deeply interested in theatre in high school feel like "lost flamingos" in college because they have no creative outlet. LFC aims to be that outlet.
LFC is the most successful student-run theatre group in recent Ohio University history. "The Blackwood Players" (1999-2001) and "Spotlight Cabaret" (1998-2000) are the only other student run theater groups that have registered with the Office of Student Activities since 1993. Both groups did not last more than four years. LFC will celebrate it's eighth birthday in the fall of 2010.
In the beginning, the company performed most of it's shows in classrooms, but has moved toward more legitimate theatre venues in recent years. The company regularly performs at Mitchell Auditorium in Seigfred Hall, Baker Center Theater, and ARTS/West. However, the company still clings to it's "pirate theatre" roots of being able to perform at a wide variety of venues.
Over the years, the company has grown to be one of the largest and most popular student groups on campus. They perform numerous shows every quarter, and through ticket sales have been able to donate thousands of dollars to various charities.
LFC's is also responsible for the wildly popular Rocky Horror Picture Show, performed every year at the Union Bar, as well as The Vagina Monologues, performed annually in Baker Center.
